We had an eventful canal boat holiday with Derek and Penny which included a very small Oliver. Derek was an enthusiastic captain, always trying to pass through one more lock, when he wasn't laughing at me for endeavouring to swab the cabin roof. All good memories.

In fond memory of my tutorial partner Derek, 1965-1968 Trinity College Oxford. Derek had an enquiring mind when it came tutorials which made our sessions interesting. I managed to beat him at chess on just one occasion when he explaimed afterwards that I had not used a classic opening/defence and that confused him. He was great fun to be with in those three years. In his first year he announced that he had the room/set at Trinity allocated to his father and grandfather, and he was proud to be able to say that: family loyalty to the College.
