Derek was well known for his critical eye.  My late husband Allan Scarff told me that Derek had a mug at work with the legend "To know me is to love me" inscribed on it!  Whenever Allan had to submit a document to Derek, he would drop in the odd spelling mistake to Derek to pounce on, allowing more controversial script to escape under the radar!

I hope Allan and his old opponent are now happily playing GO together!
